ORGANIC THOUGHT DUMPS

Stop Trying to Convince Everyone

The strongest internet accounts usually stop explaining themselves to people who were never going to get it anyway.

The fastest way to make an internet thing feel smaller is to spend all day defending it.

You see this with accounts, communities, products, weird little subcultures, even memes. Somebody doesn't get it, so the owner immediately jumps into explanation mode.

No, no, you have to understand. Here's the context. Here's why it's actually smart. Here's why people like it. Here's why this isn't cringe. Here's a six-post thread proving the joke is funny.

Now it feels like a school presentation.

The interesting stuff online usually has a bit of indifference built into it. Not fake scarcity. Not the corny "if you know you know" line pasted under everything. Just a sense that the thing is going to keep existing whether one random person approves of it or not.

Think about the accounts that feel like actual worlds.

You land on the profile and nobody is waiting at the door to explain the lore. There are old posts you don't fully understand. People in the replies clearly know something you don't. There are references that assume you've been around. Maybe you figure it out. Maybe you don't.

That gap is part of the appeal.

Trying to convince everyone also destroys your own filter. If every complaint changes the tone, every confused comment triggers a clarification post, and every outsider gets a custom explanation, the account slowly becomes designed by the least-compatible people who found it.

That is how a strange, specific thing turns into oatmeal.

There are obvious limits here. If you're selling something, people need to understand what they're buying. If a factual claim is confusing, clarify it. If you're accidentally misleading people, fix it.

But taste doesn't need a customer-service department.

A joke doesn't need unanimous approval. A character doesn't need universal relatability. A weird page doesn't need to explain why it's weird.

Some people are supposed to bounce.

That might be the entire reason the right people stay.
