INTERNET BEHAVIOUR / OBSERVATIONS

Everybody Wants to Look Early

Online, being early has become a status symbol. People do not just want to discover things first. They want everyone else to know they were there before the crowd.

Everybody wants to be early.

Not necessarily actually early.

They want to look early.

There is a difference.

Being early means you found the thing before it was obvious.

Looking early means making sure everybody else knows you found the thing before it was obvious.

The internet is full of this.

“Been saying this for months.”

“I remember when this had 300 followers.”

“Bought this at 200k.”

“Been here since 2021.”

“Called it.”

Sometimes there is even a screenshot attached from nine months ago like courtroom evidence.

Nobody asked, but now we all know.

That is because being early online has turned into a form of status.

Early means you saw something

If you are early to something that becomes important later, it implies you noticed something other people missed.

Maybe you had better taste.

Maybe you understood the technology.

Maybe you were connected.

Maybe you were just terminally online enough to stumble into the right Discord at 3 AM.

Doesn't really matter.

The result looks the same after the fact.

You were there.

Everyone else came later.

That is why old usernames, old screenshots, early wallet activity, ancient forum accounts and weird archived posts can suddenly become trophies.

A screenshot of somebody talking about Bitcoin in 2011 now reads completely differently than it did in 2011.

At the time, it was just some guy posting about Bitcoin.

Now it looks like evidence of foresight.

The event changed the status of the artifact.

Crypto is probably the purest version of this because the scoreboard is so obvious.

If a coin goes from nothing to huge, everybody immediately starts sorting themselves by when they arrived.

Pre-launch.

Under 100k.

Under 1m.

Before Binance.

Before everyone on CT started talking about it.

Before the influencers.

Before the normies.

Before your barber asked about it.

Every stage creates another group who gets to call the next group late.

It is extremely funny.

Nobody screenshots the things they were early to that died

This is the less glamorous part.

People discover thousands of things early.

Most of them disappear.

Nobody is posting:

found this project at 600 followers before the founders abandoned it three weeks later

There is no prestige in being early to nothing.

So the internet slowly creates a fake picture where certain people appear to have an unbelievable ability to identify everything before it becomes popular.

Usually you are seeing the survivors.

The one old tweet that aged perfectly.

The one wallet entry that did 80x.

The one obscure artist they followed before the breakout.

The one account they were mutuals with at 2,000 followers.

You do not see the graveyard.

That does not mean being early is meaningless. Some people genuinely are very good at noticing interesting things before everyone else.

But retrospect makes everybody look cleaner.

Being early is messy while it is happening.

Half the time you do not even know what you are early to.

There is also fake early

This is where it gets stupid.

Once being early becomes valuable, people start manufacturing the appearance of it.

Deleting old bad calls.

Reposting vague predictions after something happens.

Buying into something after it has already moved, then talking like they were in the trenches at launch.

Joining a community, learning three pieces of lore, and suddenly speaking like they helped build the fucking thing.

You see it constantly when some tiny internet subculture breaks containment.

The original weirdos were talking about it when nobody cared.

Then a larger group arrives.

Then the people who arrived five days ago start explaining the culture to the people arriving today.

Within two weeks, everybody is an OG.

The timeline gets rewritten very quickly.

And because most people are not going to dig through two years of posts to verify who was actually there, confidence does a lot of the work.

Early is more useful as identity than as fact

The interesting part is that “early” becomes part of the character.

Some accounts are permanently early.

They only talk about things before they are mainstream.

New platforms.

Tiny coins.

Unknown artists.

Private betas.

Weird tools with ugly interfaces.

Telegram groups with 412 people in them.

The second something gets too popular, they lose interest.

Part of that is genuine curiosity.

Part of it is because their status comes from discovering, not participating.

They need the next thing.

There is always another frontier online because the internet is too large for anybody to actually keep up with all of it.

So you can build an entire identity around standing slightly ahead of everybody else and pointing backwards.

“This is where things are going.”

Sometimes you are right.

Sometimes you are just a guy in a Discord nobody will remember.

But when one of those things hits, the old screenshot comes out.

Of course it does.

Everybody wants receipts that they saw the movie before the trailer dropped.
